After leading a nonprofit organization with an active and developing board of directors and having served on the Chorus America Board for 9 years, I have learned that there are many tasks, attributes, and roles that make up a vibrant board of directors. This workshop offers valuable information with support from Chorus America work/resources coupled with lived experiences will help guide, energize, and activate an arts organization board.
Choral music is a vehicle to tell a story. Whether a story embedded in history, fantasy, family, nature, society, or emotions, a choir can communicate deeply with the audience. How do we focus on choral artistry while we incorporate visual and theatrical interest? Repertoire will focus on treble choir music for beginning and advanced ensembles.
Choral singing is storytelling. Unlike compositions for instrumentalists, choral composers focus on text and write to tell the story of the poetry through sound, harmony, rhythm, and imagination. Whether a story embedded in history, fantasy, family, nature, society, or emotions, a choir can communicate deeply with the audience. How do we focus on choral artistry while we incorporate visual and theatrical interest? This workshop explores choral singing appropriate for general music classroom through advanced choral music for mixed voices.
Many choral educators focus their work based on traditionally recognized singing philosophies. The Schulwerk is often thought of as instrumental philosophy but is that right? No! The Schulwerk is about bringing music to life and begins with singing. Singing games and folks songs. But how do we bring this philosophy into a choral rehearsal? Especially into rooms where singers are older? The Orff philosophy can lay the foundation for teacher preparation and artistic, creative exploration in repertoire for all ages.
Why is artistry important? When our students feel successful and have achieved beyond their own expectations, they become more intricately involved in the rehearsal process and desire to grow together. They hold themselves accountable and encourage each other to remain committed and grow. This workshop explores creative ways to engage our choristers in artistry.
